Name: Anthony "Antaba" Corona. Died: December 9, 2016. Age at death: 18. Cause of death: Death in restraint. Location: San Bernardino, California, USA.
Details: Anthony, called "Antaba" by his family, lived with his uncle and grandmother. He attended a special-needs school where he had been going since he was a child. He was an opera fan; whenever his grandmother tried to get him to watch cartoons, he'd change the channel so that he could watch singing. He liked to read, and liked eating at McDonald's, where he always got a Happy Meal.
On the school bus home--after enduring nearly all of the two-hour bus ride--Anthony became distressed, knocking on the window and throwing a plastic water bottle at an aide. When another student tried to help the aide "calm him down", Anthony grabbed the student's necklace, breaking it. The other student got angry and punched Anthony in the face.
In response to this fight, school staff restrained Anthony--who was still strapped into his seat--by pushing his head down between his legs, a position that made it impossible for Anthony to breathe. He suffocated and died.
Name: Lei Wenfeng. Died: December 3, 2016. Age at death: 15. Cause of death: Food poisoning; neglect at a center for the homeless. Location: Shaoguan, Guangdong province, China.
Details: Wenfeng was born in rural Hunan province; he had two sisters. Together with his father, he moved to the city where he lived in a dormitory and worked at an electronics factory. He liked durian fruit.
One night Wenfeng left the dormitory and got lost. He was picked up by police 83 miles away, but they were unable to find his identity records even though Wenfeng was able to tell them his name and his mother's name.
So Wenfeng was transferred from a hospital to an assistance center. Conditions there were horrible, and after a month the boy was suffering from food poisoning, unable to keep anything down and losing weight rapidly. He was hospitalized, but received poor care there as well. He died just short of his sixteenth birthday.
The center was investigated and it came to light that twenty other people had died there within forty-nine days. The care center has been shut down; its administrator was arrested. Only after he was dead did Wenfeng's father finally find him.
Name: Chance Vanderpool. Died: November 22, 2016. Age at death: 4. Cause of death: Fatal abuse; skull fracture. Location: Glen St. Mary, Florida, USA.
Details: Chance and three of his brothers, including his two-year-old little brother, lived with their mother. Five months before his death, his mother's boyfriend moved in with them. He was controlling and violent and beat both boys; Chance had to go to the hospital twice for head injuries. Each time his mother said they had been accidental.
On the morning of November 22, Chance was found unresponsive and taken to the hospital, but he could not be revived. Doctors found that he had a skull fracture, and saw that his body had bruises and a burn. They became worried for Chance's surviving three brothers.
Chance's little brother had been taken to the hospital along with Chance. When doctors examined the two-year-old, they found injuries consistent with abuse.
Chance's three brothers were taken into state care; his mother's boyfriend was arrested for child abuse.

Name: Leah Ratheram. Died: October 7, 2016. Age at death: 20. Cause of death: Suicide (Hanging), after long-term bullying/assault, inadequate mental health care. Location: Birmingham, England, UK.
Details: Leah Ratheram, who was living with autism and fetal alcohol syndrome, had the misfortune of also living next door to the neighbors from hell.
Two of her neighbors forced their way into her home and beat her severely with a metal dog chain. They threw her friend, who was staying with her, off their third-story balcony; he survived, but with injuries so severe that he was left with a permanently damaged hip joint. And as if beating her with a dog lead wasn't enough, the invaders poured vinegar into Leah's wounds before leaving. They were caught and sentenced to prison, but Leah's mental health began to suffer after the incident.
Already a domestic violence survivor and prone to mood swings, Leah was transferred from one mental health agency to another, and the new agency talked about but never scheduled proper assessments. Unable to find help, Leah succumbed to depression and committed suicide.
Name: Carl Gregory. Died: October 4, 2016. Age at death: 20. Cause of death: Murder (Beaten, strangled). Location: Broadstairs, England, UK.
Details: His family describes Carl Gregory as a very typical 20-year-old who loved gaming, modern technology, and Pokémon Go. He had a girlfriend named Chloe, with whom he'd broken up; but they had remained friends and were considering going back to dating again. He was a Marlowe Academy graduate who worked as an online personal shopper for Sainsbury's.
Carl may have been playing Pokémon Go when he was out in a supermarket parking lot. Two men, acquaintances of his, attacked and killed him by beating and strangling him. Initially called "the first Pokémon Go murder" and widely covered, Carl's death fell out of the media spotlight when Chloe and his family explained that the mobile game had nothing to do with the murder. Apparently, Carl had shared a tasteless meme on Facebook, and the bullies decided that this was grounds for murder.
The prosecutor in the case has stated that he believes there were "elements of vulnerability" involved in the murder because of Carl's Asperger syndrome.
